DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION IN THE PRACTICE OF DISPUTE RESOLUTION

The legal profession is in constant flux. Over the last few decades, it has undergone a number of fundamental changes by virtue of modern technology: what began as a large-scale transition from paper to screens has advanced into a full digital revolution that is radically reshaping the ways in which lawyers work.

New technologies increasingly capture the dispute resolution industry. In particular, the fields of litigation and arbitration lend themselves well to the assistance of tailor-made technology solutions to handle not only routine day-to-day tasks, but also more complex projects.

This article provides an overview of selected approaches to implement legal technology, or ‘legal tech’, in the practice of dispute resolution. It identifies some of the challenges that lawyers may face in their endeavours to fully reap the benefits from digitalisation, and highlights the benefits of legal tech for clients.

Legal tech and digital transformation

It is claimed that humanity produces more than 2.5 quintillion bytes of data every day. The growth of information at this astonishing rate affects legal professionals perhaps more than anyone. Engaging in the creation, collection and evaluation of data is at the heart of their occupation. In the course of any of these processes, technology can assist lawyers to work more efficiently in the event of information overload, and ultimately to operate with greater precision and reliability.
